ABOUT SHPE The Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE) was founded in 1973 in Los Angeles, California, by Rodrigo "Rod" Garcia and a group of engineers employed by the city of Los Angeles. In 1974, SHPE was officially incorporated. Their objective was to determine how they could contribute to diversifying the STEM field, which then grew to a national organization of professional engineers serving as role models in the Hispanic community.
The concept of Networking was the key basis for the organization. SHPE quickly established two student chapters to begin the network that would grow to encompass the nation as well as reach countries outside the United States. Today, SHPE serves more than 11,000 members, enjoying a strong and independent network of around 375 professional and student chapters throughout the nation, and we are coming up on 50 years at work.
