SHPE OR PROGRAMS
Helping our members to reach their highest potential is one of our goals. Offering a chance to give back to our community through volunteering opportunities is embedded in our DNA by our value of SERVICE. SHPE OR has programs to support your needs; Professional Development, SHPEtina, Academic and Community Outreach. As a relatively new chapter, we are still solidifying new events that will strengthen our current programs. Stay tuned for future events!
Academic Program - This program is focused in supporting students through events and workshops that will enhance their skills to find Summer internships, their dream job and develop new interviewing skills. The audience encompasses the three Oregon universities; Oregon State University, Portland State University and University of Portland, and at times Region 1.
Bomba Blast is an annual event during the Fall semester. Under the Academic program, SHPE OR provides partial sponsorship to students to attend conventions or conferences. At the same time, SHPE OR professional members may serve as mentors or connected them with one, when requested by students.
Professional Development Program - It was created with the idea that supporting each other's careers growth is the best path. We partner with local mid-career and seasoned STEM professionals who serve as speakers, either to discuss technical topics in which they are subject matter experts or talk about their STEM journey. Topics include negotiating salaries, career development paths, the importance of mentorship, how to utilize Employee Resources Groups (ERGs) to grow our career and learn new skills, among many other crucial subjects related to creating a fulfilling and successful career. Under this program we also collaborate with local companies or nonprofits to use our social media channels to promote job openings or career fairs; the objective is to create a link among our recent graduates and potential employees. Last but not least, we create professional networking events where ERGs leads and professionals (non members) are invited to chat with our SHPE Familia. This creates the opportunity to expose our Hispanic STEM talent to companies, either for a mentorship opportunity or job offer while companies are connected with a pool of talented engineers.
SHPEtina Program - Igniting the fire among our female members to break the glass ceiling! This program is designed to empower Hispanic women to be unapologetically authentic and confident while creating the career path they aspire to. In this program we welcome everyone but it is tailored for women of color in STEM.
Community Outreach Program - It is a combination of social networking events to bring our SHPE Familia together and social service to strengthen our bonds with our community. This program offers opportunities to serve in our community, either through STEM educational events targeted for K-12 and high-schoolers, such Noche de Ciencias or by supporting local nonprofits in their quest to offer help to those who are most in need. Under this program we have the Back to School Drive; it aims to collect backpacks full of supplies for underrepresented students who are in need at the start of each scholastic year. The recipients would be kids who attend the annual Noche de Ciencias on April's "Dia del Niño" event in partnership with Centro Cultural in Cornelius, OR.
This program supports smaller local organizations dedicated to support education advancement of Hispanics students.

ACADEMIC PROGRAM EVENTS
Bomba Blast Resume Workshop - Helping students to enhance their resumes and practice mock interviews to prep them before heading to the SHPE National Convention. This is possible thanks to STEM professionals from local companies from diverse industries who volunteer their time and skills to help our future STEM generation of professionals.
Bomba Blast Career Panel - Helping our early career professionals and students navigate their careers. Seasoned/mid-career STEM professionals share their journey in a panel-style event. The speakers/panelists talk about different topics, such the importance of mentorship, how to advance your career, how to overcome challenges related to our diversity based in their personal experiences, how to ace an interview and more relevant topics. In this event, attendees have the opportunity to ask questions to obtain advice or guidance. |
PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM - EVENTS
SHPEspeaker Series - This program helps develop public speaking skills and professional presence for our participating members through mentoring and coaching by seasoned volunteer professionals. Then, we partner with local companies who would like to enhance their DEI (Diversity, Equity and Inclusion) efforts by inviting Hispanic STEM professionals for in-person presentation sessions to gain a valuable perspective from our stories as STEM professionals from a minority group.
|
Financial Literacy - We believe that a successful career also includes good financial health. To help our SHPE Familia become financially intelligent, we bring informative webinars about Budgeting, Getting out of Debt, Life Insurance and Investments. In 2020 and 2021, Primerica has volunteered their time to make the Financial Literacy Series possible.

Noche de Ciencias - Engaging our K-12 community through STEM activities. SHPE OR provides the material and we meet virtually to explain & do hands-on activities with the help of their parents/guardians. We are looking forward to hosting in-person activities!
We also provide one event targeted to high-schoolers. It is a panel-type session, in which college students have the chance to share their journey and stories about how they have overcome different types of challenges. Our goal is to motivate high school students to go to college and to pursue a STEM-related degree. We share with high school students, resources about scholarships and other ways that our SHPE Familia have found to pay for college. Back to School Drive - New in 2021!! Organized by our chapter but only possible with the generous collaboration of our Oregonian community! The goal of this event is to collect school supplies to fill backpacks and raffle them in our Noche the Ciencias events. Currently looking to partner with local companies/organizations that would like to host a "school supplies bucket", please contact us here. |
