SHPE OR PROFESSIONAL CHAPTER

Gracias for visiting the SHPE Oregon website. As a professional chapter of the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE), we serve the State of Oregon, Southern WA and SHPE Region 1 at-large. Our leadership team comprises industry, academia, and non-profit, striving to bring new opportunities to Hispanics in the areas we serve. We are more than a diversity pipeline for Silicon Forest, we are an integral part of a new generation workforce that advances engineering and innovation.

SHPE Oregon tailors the fundamental SHPE pillars in order to address the particular needs of our local communities. Our development and outreach activities are a joint effort with student chapters in Oregon and we take special pride in serving as their senior advisers, from co-sponsoring a large conference such as the RLDC to sitting down for a résumé makeover session.

The path to equalizing success is a challenging one. It’s hard work that results in deep relationships that build strong communities. Our people (nuestra gente) are our most important asset.

Let’s do it together! ¡Hagámoslo juntos!

A WORD FROM OUR PRESIDENT

Picture
I am grateful and honored to serve as the President at SHPE Oregon Professional Chapter. Through the core value of “Familia”, I have been blessed to feel a sense of belonging, which has positively impacted my career and personal life, creating the desire to pay it forward.

I am a strong advocate to inspire our youth to join the exciting field of STEM, and to help create an equitable work culture where everyone, regardless of sex or other distinctions, is empowered and supported to aspire for the same opportunities.
At SHPE Oregon, we encourage each member to bring their authentic self and to appreciate the diversity that each person brings to the table.  Together we can create a psychologically safe environment and an inclusive organization that empowers Hispanics in STEM to become better versions of themselves. In doing so we will expand our skills and give back to our community.

We support each SHPE Familia member in achieving their goals and enhancing their careers by providing opportunities for professional development and leadership growth. We firmly believe in the value of our members and volunteers.
As President, I am committed to bringing events that add value to our professional engineering community and  inspiring our K-12 and high-schoolers to become our next generation of STEM professionals. I look forward to working with our SHPE Familia to build our staple event “Noche de Ciencias”, and to offer volunteering opportunities for seasoned STEM professionals in the Portland metro area who desire to help propel our member’s professional success.

I hope that soon you will become one more of our valued members and enjoy the benefits of being part of our network and SHPE Familia. I am humbled for the opportunity to lead SHPE Oregon during the 2021-2022 term and I welcome you to our SHPE Oregon website!

Best Regards,
Gladys Garza
SHPE Oregon President
